The Oil and Gas sector has weathered its fair share of storms over the years. The recession years hit it hard and since 2014 geopolitical and economic unrest in the key oil and gas producing regions of the Middle East and Africa, combined with a surge in shale gas production in the US and falling oil prices, have resulted in a relative slowdown in hiring.

That said, despite some companies adopting a more conservative approach to hiring and opting to wait-and-see how events will transpire, there are still hot spots in hiring thanks to an improving global economy.

Economic growth leads to increased energy, which in turn leads to price increases and increased hiring activity. Add reduced geopolitical tensions to the equation and we could soon see demand for overseas workers increase further.

There are a number of candidate-short areas, which is having the effect of pushing up salaries for overseas contractors. But the increases are also being felt elsewhere too, with some countries offering higher salaries to attract their expats back from international assignments.

The roles currently in greatest demand range from engineers, plant operators and maintenance technicians to senior project staff with decommissioning experience, piping engineers, and drilling engineers.
